Type approval in Zimbabwe
POTRAZ (Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe) approval refers to the regulatory approval that businesses and service providers in Zimbabwe must obtain from the authority before they can offer certain telecommunications and postal services in the country. POTRAZ is responsible for overseeing the regulation of the telecommunications sector, including the allocation of licenses, enforcement of standards, and ensuring the efficient functioning of telecommunications and postal services.
Here are some key areas where POTRAZ approval is typically required:
1. Telecommunications Service Providers:
Any company intending to operate as a telecommunications provider, such as mobile network
operators, internet service providers (ISPs), and other telecommunication services
(like VoIP services), must be licensed by POTRAZ.
These licenses ensure that the company meets technical, financial, and legal requirements
before offering services to the public.
2. Equipment and Devices:
POTRAZ also regulates the import and sale of certain telecommunications equipment
(e.g., mobile phones, modems, and network infrastructure). Companies or individuals
wishing to import or sell such devices must seek approval from POTRAZ to ensure compliance
with standards and regulations.
This may involve registration or certification of equipment to guarantee that it works safely and
is compatible with Zimbabwe's telecommunications network.
3. Radio Frequency Spectrum:
POTRAZ is responsible for managing and allocating radio frequencies for broadcasting,
mobile networks, and other radio-based services.
Entities wishing to use radio frequencies (e.g., for setting up radio stations, TV broadcasts, or new communication systems) must apply for approval from POTRAZ.
4. Postal Services:
Companies providing postal services, such as mail delivery and courier services, must obtain approval and licenses from POTRAZ.
The authority also sets standards for postal service quality and monitoring.
5. Content Regulation:
POTRAZ also plays a role in overseeing content and services offered via telecommunication platforms to ensure compliance with Zimbabwe’s laws, including those related to national security, broadcasting regulations, and public safety.
June 2021

Frequencies allowed in Zimbabwe:
The 900 MHz band is primarily used by mobile network operators in Zimbabwe for providing cellular services.
The 2.4 GHz band is considered lightly licensed, meaning users can access it with a simple registration process.
This frequency is primarily used for WiFi access in Zimbabwe.
