Type approval in Zambia
ZITCA Approval in Zambia refers to the approval granted by the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA). ZICTA is the regulatory body responsible for the development and management of the telecommunications and information technology sectors in Zambia.
When we talk about ZITCA approval, it typically involves the following contexts:
1. Telecommunications Equipment Importation Approval:
ZICTA regulates the importation and use of telecommunications equipment and devices in Zambia. Before importing certain devices, particularly those related to telecom services (e.g., mobile phones, wireless devices, etc.), the importer or manufacturer must seek approval from ZICTA to ensure that the equipment complies with Zambian regulations regarding standards, safety, and communication protocols.
2. Licensing and Certification:
ZICTA also grants licenses and certifications for businesses that wish to operate in the
ICT sector, such as internet service providers (ISPs), mobile network operators, or
other companies involved in providing telecommunications or digital services in Zambia.
ZITCA approval may refer to the process of obtaining such licenses or certifications.
3. Cybersecurity and Data Protection Compliance:
ZICTA is involved in overseeing compliance with cybersecurity regulations, including the
protection of personal data and online activities. If an entity wants to operate in Zambia's
digital or communications space, they may need to get ZITCA approval to ensure they
follow the required standards.
4. Infrastructure Development:
ZICTA oversees the deployment of ICT infrastructure in Zambia. This may include approval for the construction of telecom towers, fiber-optic cables, and other network facilities. Companies involved in developing such infrastructure would require ZICTA approval to ensure alignment with national standards and regulations.
5. Content Regulation:
In some cases, ZICTA's approval is needed for digital content providers or broadcasters. For example, online streaming services or content distribution platforms may need to adhere to regulatory standards set by ZICTA to operate legally in Zambia.
In summary, ZITCA approval typically involves the formal approval or authorization by ZICTA for activities, equipment, or businesses in the telecommunications and ICT sector in Zambia. The exact nature of the approval depends on the type of activity, whether it's importing devices, providing services, or building infrastructure.

The word “ZICTA” shall be at least 3mm in height. The size ratio of all the characters and symbol shall be maintained relative to ZICTA.
Where “ZMB/ZICTA/TA/YYYY/..” appears shall be substituted the registration type approval certificate number allocated by ZICTA to the concerned equipment model.
8.0 Marking Requirements
Marking is the process of affixing a label and a specified Type Approval number on the Type Approved RTTE which is made or imported into the Zambian market, indicating its compliance with ZICTA’s recognized technical standards and requirements for the purpose of improving consumer’s confidence in electronic communications products and services in Zambia.
All Type Approved RTTE must have a legible label permanently affixed to the outside of such equipment, bearing:
The corresponding marking from the country or region where the original Type Approval had been obtained in the event that the RTTE in question has been approved according to the Type Acceptance Type Approval process.
The label approved by ZICTA as shown in Appendix C of these Guidelines in the event where the RTTE in question has been approved according to the Standard Type Approval process.

The regulation on type approval previously published by Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) has become mandatory after the end of its transitional period.
October 2018
Due to the number of products being imported and sold in Zambia without the required regulatory label and approval, starting in January 2019, the agency will be sending agents to the customs stations to inspect packages/products to ensure they have been approved and bear the required labeling. Products without proper approval and markings could be subject to confiscation, fines, etc. It is very important to approve all your products prior to importation.
