November 2024
The International Telecommunication Union of the United Nations has announced the addition of Minister Marsha Caddle, Barbados’ Minister of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology, to one of its newest strategic Boards.
The Digital Innovation Board is part of the ITU Innovation and Entrepreneurship Alliance for Digital Development and provides strategic guidance, expertise, and advocacy on transformational projects that foster digital innovation and entrepreneurship at the national, regional, and global levels.
Among its tools for achieving this has been the establishment of a Digital Transformation Lab and digital accelerations centers across the world. The acceleration centers engage emerging developer and technologist talent to solve problems in-country and at scale, building an innovation eco-system to drive a new, digital economy.
The Board comprises 13 Ministers drawn from ITU’s 194 Member States, along with 19 regulators, advisors, academics and civil society, and private sector leaders from around the world. Countries represented include India, Japan, Brazil, Serbia, South Africa, and now Barbados.
The announcement was made during a meeting of the Board as part of the ITU Global Innovation Forum being held in Malta, an island nation smaller than Barbados but with double the population, as well as full employment, a thriving gaming and e-sport industry, and a number 1 ranking out of 35 European countries in eGovernment services.
Minister Caddle said it was important to be practical by aligning with countries of a similar size and capacity to Barbados who were already achieving goals that Barbados had set, noting that Malta had been able to establish the economic growth and quality of life it did by being intentional about growing its population base and fostering innovation.
Type approval in Barbados
In Barbados, the Ministry of Finance, Economic Affairs, and Energy Telecommunications Unit (MFEAE) is responsible for regulating the approval and certification of telecommunications products and services within the country. This process is part of the broader effort to ensure that telecom products and services comply with national standards, legal frameworks, and industry regulations, which helps safeguard consumers, enhance the quality of service, and promote fair competition in the market.
The Telecommunications Unit under the Ministry's oversight typically handles the approval process for various telecom-related products, including:
Telecommunications Equipment: This includes devices like mobile phones, routers, networking equipment, and other telecom hardware. These products must meet specific technical, safety, and environmental standards before being introduced into the market.
Licensing of Service Providers: Companies that offer telecom services (such as internet, mobile, and fixed-line services) must obtain approval from the Ministry, which ensures that their operations comply with local laws, consumer protection standards, and service quality regulations.
Compliance with Regulatory Standards: The Unit ensures that all telecom products comply with international and local standards, such as electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and safety requirements. It also assesses whether the products meet the technical specifications necessary for operation in the Barbadian market.
Importation and Distribution of Telecom Products: The Ministry may also oversee the importation and distribution of telecom products to ensure that these meet the regulatory requirements. Businesses importing such products would need to obtain certification from the Ministry before they can legally distribute or sell them in Barbados.
For more specific information or to start the approval process, businesses or individuals can contact the Telecommunications Unit directly or consult official government publications. This is particularly relevant for companies looking to import or distribute telecom products in Barbados.
Frequencies allowed in Barbados:
The 900 MHz band is allowed in Barbados, specifically the 902-928 MHz range, which is considered a "licence-exempt" frequency band, meaning devices operating within that range do not require a specific license to use.
For a more detailed list of frequencies allowed in Barbados, contact CSIA.
Barbados is located in The Caribbean.
The current population as of 2024 is 282,467.
