Regulatory Updates For Papua New Guinea

December 2023
The National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) has called for comments on the draft band plans for the 600 and 800 MHz radiofrequency spectrum. The authority has drawn up these drafts proposing the allocation of the aforementioned bands to International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) services, as part of the Government's Digital Transformation Policy.

August 2023
The National Information and Communication Technology Authority (NICTA), considering that the 60 GHz band is widely perceived by the industry as an emerging area for products and services, that this band is ideally suited for deployment of Multi-Gigabit Wireless Systems (MGWS) to provide short range wireless links with high data rate and bandwidth and the new rising technologies, has released a public consultation on the draft band plan for this spectrum range.

July 2023
The National Information and Communication Technologies Authority (NICTA) of Papua New Guinea (PNG) has announced its intent to introduce two regulatory instruments under the National ICT Act of 2009.

The ICT Equipment Type Approval Rule outlines the requirements for approving, importing, selling, using, or connecting ICT equipment to PNG’s ICT networks, including obtaining PNG Customs authorization.

NICTA oversees the process of type approval and registration of ICT equipment under five distinct registration schemes categorized as follows:

Primary cell-operated equipment
Customer Equipment (CE)
Controlled Customer Equipment (CCE)
Low Interference Power Devices (LIPD) or Short-Range Devices (SRD)
Radio Communications Equipment

All type approval procedures, equipment registration schemes, and general guidelines must comply with the NICTA Type Approval Guideline.
